Happy Mother’s Day 2013

Happy Mother’s Day !

Today is the second Sunday in the month of May. In Canada, the United States and many other countries, mothers, and all that they do, are celebrated on this one day. I am not going to go into the history or its significance to mothers here on my blog. I am however going to reflect on what Mother’s Day means to me personally.

This past week I have been listening to radio and television advertisements about how to honour one’s mother.  Most talk about making sure you buy some flowers or perhaps make mom breakfast. They then go on to suggest that after you made a mess in the kitchen, you can give mom a gift certificate to make up for it.

No, not my idea of celebrating Mother’s Day. Celebrating Mother’s day should be about family and time spent together making memories.

First of all, let me say that I no longer have a mom. I lost her a number of years ago when I was just starting out on my career. There was so much that we could have shared together. But it was not to be. I was fortunate to have her share her thoughts, experiences, life lessons and love for the first 20 years of my life.

So how do I honour and celebrate her now? I try to remember all that she taught me. One thing that I do know, my mom would be pleased that I turned out okay. I have become independent and I am my own person. She encouraged me to choose a career that I loved and one where I could financially take care of myself. Even when I was quite young, she went on about how I needed to be able to take care of myself. “Never rely on anyone!” I have always thought that she was really referring to not relying upon a man to take care of me.

Whether this was true or not, this has become my advice now to any young girl. I think my nieces may be getting tired of me saying this, like an old broken record but really, I have worked with families that have been unhappy and desperate at times. There are too many unhappy relationships especially for women who have feelings of being stuck, being hurt physically as well as emotionally and have no way to improve the situations that they find themselves in.  So I am passing along my mom’s advice to anyone and everyone who needs to hear it.

I was fortunate to share another mom as well.

I may not of had my own mom to help me through my life’s journey, but I did get “adopted” by my wonderful mother-in-law. Now not everyone can say they had a wonderful mother-in-law, but I can. She was always there when I needed her and she never, not once, gave advice on how I needed to do things!

It may sound corny but my late mother-in-law was one of my best friends. We spent a lot of time together especially in her later years. She would often introduce me as her daughter. This comment led others to say to us that we were so lucky to have such a great relationship.

There’s never a day that I don’t miss both of my “moms”.

So what did I learn from my mom and mom-in-law?  The most important has been respecting the family. This may sound old-fashioned, but really, isn’t this daily journey we’re on all about putting others first, passing on traditions and keeping the family together?

Family gatherings were always filled with lots of good things to eat too. I learned to love cooking and baking…hmm, maybe that’s why my blog is switching gears!

With that, I’d like to wish all moms and moms-in-law out there a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Here’s a little gift of poems and special thoughts on my Mother’s Keepers page that I’d like to share with all of  you. They are from my sons from a few years ago!

Happy Mother’s Day!
